So you’ve hired a cleaner or housekeeper. Congratulations! Letting a stranger into your home for the first time can be a little daunting, but to give you peace of mind, here are some simple strategies you can put in place to make it easier:

1. Make sure you have all the administrative stuffsorted out before the Cleaner or Housekeeper starts work.  For example, you should already have agreed:

  • duties
  • days/ hours of work
  • regularity of work (daily/ weekly/ fortnightly/ monthly)
  • rate of pay
  • regularity of pay (daily/ weekly/ fortnightly/ monthly)
  • expected outcomes

2. If you are engaging a Cleaner or Housekeeper on an ongoing basis, you should also consider whether you want to enter in to a written contract of employment.  A contract of employment should include the above, and could also cover matters like:

  • Annual leave
  • Sick leave
  • Termination
  • Superannuation
  • Confidentiality

3. Write a Starter Checklist and run the Cleaner or Housekeeper through this before their first day of work.  Cover off topics such as:

  • Home alarm, keys and rules around these
  • Cleaning products
  • Cleaning checklist

Enjoy your lovely clean home!
